Moran was the son of famous marine painter, Edward Moran, who in turn was the older brother of renowned U.S. Geological Survey western expedition landscape chronicler, Thomas Moran. He began his art studies under his famous father and later trained at the National Academy of Design (New York City). His subjects varied widely and included birds, garden scenes, portraits, landscapes, military genre. Moran exhibited widely—World’s Columbian Exhibition (1892-1893), American Water Color Society, Society of Independent Artists, National Academy of Design, Boston Art Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
